Bette Midler and Justin Timberlake lead tributes to Leonard Cohen

Bette Midler and Justin Timberlake led the tributes to Leonard Cohen following the singer's death on Thursday (10Nov16) aged 82.

A post on Cohen's Facebook page on Thursday evening read: "It is with profound sorrow we report that legendary poet, songwriter and artist, Leonard Cohen has passed away. We have lost one of music's most revered and prolific visionaries."

Following the sad news, a slew of celebrities took to their social media to pay tribute and remember the legendary singer.

Bette led the way, tweeting: "Leonard Cohen has died. Another magical voice stilled."

Justin wrote, "A spirit and soul beyond compare," while Jennifer Hudson shared a video of herself singing one of Cohen's most famous songs, Hallelujah.

"RIP Leonard Cohen. Thank you for you dedication to music, & writing one of my favorite songs to sing, Hallelujah," she wrote.

Moby posted a throwback picture of Cohen, writing: "Dear God, no. The darkness just got so much darker. Such a beautiful man, such a beautiful soul. Please rest in peace, Leonard."

Regina Spektor thanked Cohen for his impact on the music industry, tweeting: "Such sad news...The great Leonard Cohen has passed away. Thank's for what your music has done for humanity... Kindness, love, beauty, poetry," while OneRepublic concurred in their tweet, writing: "R.I.P Leonard Cohen. U (sic) are without a doubt one of the greatest songs writers of any generation. THANK YOU for your life. #RIPLeonard."

Musical offspring Sean Lennon and Nancy Sinatra also paid their own respects, with Sean tweeting, "Leonard Cohen R.I.P. 2016 now officially one of the saddest years," and Nancy adding, "One of the best ever. So sad. Rest with the angels, Leonard, Hallelujah."

Jeff Buckley and Carole King also tweeted "#RIPLeonard".

It wasn't only musical stars who paid tribute to Cohen though. Russell Crowe posted a heartfelt message to the late singer, writing: "Dear Leonard Cohen, thanks for the quiet nights, the reflection, the perspective, the wry smiles and the truth #towerofsong."

Hamilton star Lin-Manuel Miranda followed in Crowe's footsteps with his post: "This is heartbreaking. Can't help but feel grateful for the tower of song he leaves behind."

Others referenced the fact that Cohen's death comes just days after Donald Trump was named the new U.S. President Elect, beating Hillary Clinton in the race to the White House.

"RIP Leonard Cohen. Ugh. It feels pointed, this death. It's making us remember songs like Come Healing which is a good one for these days," Sarah Silverman wrote.

Comedian Patton Oswalt tweeted, "Leonard Cohen dying is so goddamned symbolic right now. You just don't let up, do you 2016?" while Emily Ratajkowski added, "The world feels lost right about now."

Kiefer Sutherland mentioned Cohen's Canadian heritage, writing, "A brilliant Canadian artist passed today. Leonard Cohen, rest in peace. Hallelujah," while director Ron Howard tweeted, "One of my favorite singer-poets. RIP Legendary Musician Leonard Cohen."

There were no details about the cause of Cohen's death. A memorial will take place in Los Angeles at a later date, according to the Facebook announcement of his death.
